Just received your email today regarding your father Eddie Waters passing. So very sorry for your loss. Though I have never met your dad I feel that I am some how connected from listening to my dad 'Arkey M. Dziuba' and about their missions and life with the 548th Bomb Squadron, Alexanders Ragtime Band. May 8th, 1944 was never forgotten by the men of the 548th Bomb Squadron.

<a href="#comment-583" rel="nofollow">@Charles Lundsberg </a>

My name is John Mollison and I interview WW2 airmen and draw their airplanes.

I'm currently working on a B-24H that flew in the 15th AF (Italy) - it too was named "Flak Shak."

You can follow my work at www.johnmollison.com

However, please know that your father's effort in the 8th AF is not forgotten.

Thanks - apparently there was more than one B-17 named Flak Shak (and a B-24). Just saw that the 17th even got as far as having a Flak Shak III.
Looked over many of my grandfather's letters to hom ewhen I visited my parents and found out that the nose art was painted on right before its last mission. Looks like my best bet is to see if anyone took pics of the plane grounded in Belgium.

A story related to us from the book "On Falcons’ Wings: An Intrepid Generation" from Clem: There's a point in the story where he tells of the march to another camp since the Russians were advancing on their camp and as they were on the trail they saw bombers and fighters. He saw the fighters turn toward the group of some several thousand men, in an obvious ready to attack position. The POW's grabbed everything white available and spelled out POW on the ground, the fighters tipped their wings and flew off.
